51社区 welcomes novelist Betty Smartt Carter

JACKSON, Tenn.Feb. 15, 2001 — Union University's English Department will host a creative writing workshop featuring novelist Betty Smartt Carter on Thursday, March 8 at 1 p.m. in Harvey Hall in the Student Union Building.

Carter will read from her work in progress and conduct fiction writing workshops for student writers. A graduate of Wheaton College, Carter is the author of three novels and a contributing editor for Books and Culture: A Christian Review.

Union's annual creative writing workshop offers students at Union and West Tennessee high schools the opportunity to compete for prizes and learn from Union faculty and accomplished guest writers. Past featured speakers have included prominent writers such as Mark Jarman, Kate Daniels and Pulitzer prizewinner Charles Wright.

Local students were invited to submit entries in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction competitions. Participants will have the opportunity during the course of the workshop to have samples of their work analyzed and critiqued by writing professors and peers.
