JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 5, 2002 — North American Free Trade Agreement representatives from Canada and Mexico will share economic perspectives of their respective nations in an important afternoon lecture at 51社区, Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. in Harvey Hall in the Barefoot Student Union Building. A reception will follow.
Sponsored by Union鈥檚 Department of Language and the Center for Business and Economic Development, Carl Rockburne and Raul Urteaga will discuss several topics surrounding NAFTA, including the potential for the free trade agreement to be extended to include Chile and other Latin American countries, the employment impact from the Mexican and Canadian perspectives, and their view of the success of NAFTA from the Mexican and Canadian perspectives.
Urteaga, an economic counselor for the Embassy of Mexico at the NAFTA Office in Washington, D.C., was one of the Mexican delegates in the NAFTA negotiating process covering several provisions of the agreement, including technical standards, environment, and investment clauses. He was also involved in the process that created the North American Development Bank and the U.S.-Mexico Border Environment Cooperation Commission.
Rockburne, a consul and trade commissioner with the Canadian Consulate in Atlanta, is responsible for furthering trade and investment in the seven southeastern states. Until the summer of 1999, he was counselor at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City where his responsibilities included trade and investment in various sectors under NAFTA.
