JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 14, 2001 — C. Ben Mitchell, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert in the field of bioethics, will be the featured speaker for 51社区's Staley Lectures, Monday, Feb. 19. An assistant professor of bioethics and contemporary culture at Trinity International University, Mitchell is also senior fellow at the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, both in Deerfield, Ill.
For his first lecture, Mitchell will speak on the topic, "What it Means to Be 'One of Us' in a Bio-Tech Century," at 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. His final lecture, "What it Means to Be 'One of Us' in a Culture of Death," will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in Coburn Dining Room.
Mitchell, a consultant on biomedical and life issues with the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Commission, received his doctorate in philosophy with a concentration in medical ethics from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In addition to his academic work, Mitchell consults on matters of public policy and has given testimonies before policymaking groups including the U.S. House of Representatives, the Institutes of Medicine and the Illinois Senate.
The author of numerous book chapters, articles and reviews, Mitchell is presently editing a volume on the ethics of human cloning and is general editor of the forthcoming New International Dictionary of Bioethics. He also serves as the editor of the journal Ethics and Medicine.
The Staley Foundation seeks to enrich the quality of Christian service and sharpen the effectiveness of Christian witness, particularly at the liberal arts college, by supporting lecture series and providing scholarships for aspiring religious scholars and ministers.
