JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 14, 2001 — Political activist Kay Coles James will be the first featured speaker for Union University's 2001 Union Forum Series this spring.

Former senior vice-president of the Family Research Council, James served under President Bush as associate director for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and as assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She was appointed by President Reagan and re-appointed by President Bush as Commissioner on the National Commission on Children.
In the private sector, James has served in several key positions including as executive vice president and chief operating officer with the One to One Partnership, a national umbrella organization for mentoring programs and as director of public affairs for the National Right to Life Committee. James is currently the senior fellow for The Citizenship Project at the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative research and educational institute based in Washington.
James is a graduate of Hampton University and has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the William Wilberforce Award from Prison Fellowship and the Publius Institute Award for Public Policy at the University of Virginia.
Designed to be a forum for lively conversation with the nation's leaders and thinkers, the Union Forum hosts two speakers each spring. Fred Barnes, executive editor of the Washington, D.C.-based publication, The Weekly Standard, will speak in April. Both luncheons will begin at noon in the university's Coburn Dining Room.
