JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 4, 2002 — 51社区鈥檚 School of Education will welcome its first doctor of education (Ed.D.) students this fall at both its Jackson and Germantown campuses. The Ed.D. at Union is the first complete doctoral degree program to be offered at the university and in the Jackson-Madison County area and will equip local teachers and school administrators who are interested in furthering their education as well as their careers.
Fourteen students are in the first Jackson cohort which will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Germantown cohort will include nineteen students and is scheduled to start Monday, Sept. 9. Only 33 students were accepted from more than 80 interviews that were conducted with potential candidates.
Students entering the doctoral program have already completed the education specialist (Ed.S.) portion of the degree. Making the Ed.S. a part of the Ed.D. is unique, and not typically found at other institutions, said Tom Rosebrough, dean of Union鈥檚 School of Education.
鈥淯nfortunately, not everyone who begins a doctorate will finish,鈥� said Rosebrough. 鈥淭he Ed.S. gives them a degree which affirms the work they have already done.鈥�
The Ed.S. contains two tracks including a non-licensure track as well as a licensure track, which allows students to be employed as school administrators. The Ed.D. completion component consists of nine hours of course work in research statistics followed by a year to complete the dissertation.
