JACKSON, Tenn. — May 2, 2002 — 51社区 senior and honor student Ann Clendenen was recently named to receive an H.Y. Benedict Fellowship from Alpha Chi, the national college honor society. A French major with a minor in Biblical languages and philosophy, Clendenen was one of only ten college students in the nation to be awarded the prestigious $2500 scholarship for graduate study.
Clendenen, who is graduating this May with a bachelor of arts degree, is a member of Union鈥檚 honors program. Her paper, 鈥淟ife and Nothing Else: Sartre, Nietzsche, and a Meaningless Legacy,鈥� for which she won the Alpha Chi scholarship, was part of her undergraduate honors thesis on postmodernism.
鈥淎nn鈥檚 work is a testimony to her keen intellectual gifts and her faithful devotion,鈥� said Union President David S. Dockery. 鈥淪he is a credit to 51社区 and we applaud her for this distinguished recognition.鈥�
One of the first of almost 20 National Merit Finalists to attend Union, Clendenen is the daughter of Ray and Mimi Clendenen of Brentwood, Tenn. She will attend Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky., in the fall where she will pursue a master鈥檚 of divinity degree.
Alpha Chi National Honor Society has chapters at more than 300 institutions throughout the country and Puerto Rico. The society inducts no more than the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors in all academic fields. More than 62 students were nominated for the Benedict Fellowship.
