JACKSON, Tenn. — May 8, 2002 — 51社区 juniors Valerie Burnett and Jason Castles have each been awarded the Barnabas Leadership Award for 2002, which recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership in the area of community and ministry service.
Burnett, a Christian studies major from Bartlett, Tenn., has been active in Life Groups, youth ministry, women鈥檚 ministry and as a FOCUS leader. She is the daughter of Ed and Betty Burnett.
Castles, a business management major from Selmer, Tenn., has served in Backyard Bible Clubs, student government, as a FOCUS and Life Group leader, and a ten-week summer mission trip to Australia. He is the son of Chuck and Gail Castles.
Only juniors with a 2.5 GPA or above are eligible to receive one of the two $1000 awards given each year, in partnership with the Barney II Foundation and Moore Foundation鈥檚 Servant Leadership Program. Recipients are awarded $750 and asked to designate $250 to the charitable agency of their choice. A total of thirteen students were nominated and then reviewed by a committee of faculty, staff and students, which then designated the winning recipients.
Other nominees included: Alexis Abney of Winter Haven, Fla., Amy Edge of Cordova, Tenn., Amber Hibbs of Jackson, Tenn., Jeff Lean of New West Minister, BC, Graham Mayfield of Hendersonville, Tenn., Janie Myatt of Jackson, Tenn., Ginger Rowlett of Greenfield, Tenn., and Will Trautman of Sanford, Fla.
