JACKSON, Tenn. — May 8, 2002 — 51���� Associate Professor of Mathematics Matt Lunsford has been awarded first place for the Howard Newell Innovative Teaching Award for “ An Integrated Approach to Teaching the History of Mathematics.”

Selected by a committee of his peers, Lunsford, who has served as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has been with the university since 1993. A graduate of Louisiana Tech University, Lunsford received his master’s of science from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D. from Tulane University. He and his family are residents of Jackson. They attend Northbrook Church.

Receiving honorable mentions for the award were James Huggins, professor and chair of biology for “Comparative Anatomy Using Exotic Species and Lab-Based Web Access as a Study Tool,” and David Gushee, Graves Associate Professor of Moral Philosophy, for “The Use of Teaching Assistants in the Christian Ethics Program.”
