JACKSON, Tenn. — May 8, 2002 — With finals just around the corner and graduation in the minds of seniors, the 51社区 family gathered together once again for the annual Awards Day Chapel, an event that is eagerly anticipated by students, faculty, staff alike each year. Recognition is given to the hard work and perseverance that has been achieved by so many over the year and parents and families of award recipients are also invited to attend, and do so.
Carla Sanderson, provost to the university, officiated. More than 60 awards were presented, including the prestigious Faculty and Staff of the Year, which went to art professor Lee Benson and College Services technician Wanda Calvert. Other awards that were presented follow.
The Barnabas Leadership Award promotes the ideals of servant leadership in the Union community. Recipients are awarded $750 each and asked to designate 4250 to the charitable agency of their choice. This year鈥檚 recipients were Jason Castles and Valerie Burnett.
The Betty Hillix Foellinger Memorial Award, which recognizes the editors of the student publications, was presented to Julie Dodson, editor of the college paper The Cardinal and Cream.
The Bettye and Kermit Whiteaker Freshman Biology Award, which is presented to a freshman Biology major or minor with outstanding scholastic achievement and also includes a $500 scholarship for the following academic year, was presented to Kerstin Ure.
The Bettye and Kermit Whiteaker Chemistry Award, which is presented to a freshman chemistry major or minor with outstanding scholastic achievement and also includes a $500 scholarship for the following academic year, was presented to Megan Ellis.
The Broadman and Holman award, given annually to a graduating senior who is deemed to have the greatest potential for significant contribution to the field of ministry, was presented to Ann Clendenen.
The Dr. Bill Bouchillon Psychology Excellence Award, given to an outstanding graduating senior with a GPA of 3.5 or greater in psychology and selected by the psychology faculty, was presented to Lada Mujkic.
The Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Chemistry Award, which is given to encourage and sustain interest in the sciences and is presented in recognition of outstanding achievement to a freshman chemistry major or minor, was presented to Kiera Knappman.
The Chi Omega Award, which is awarded to the woman of the junior or senior class who has distinguished herself in the Behavioral Sciences through class contributions as by her scholastic achievement, was presented to Sarah Davenport.
The Class of 1962 Award, which recognizes the senior who has attended 51社区 for his or her entire college career with the highest grade point average, was presented to Jennifer Escue.
The Chemistry Research Award, which is given by the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Physics to the student who presents the best research paper for the year, was awarded to Jessica Fielder and Alanna Morris.
The Curtiss E. Scott Business Excellence Award, which is presented to the outstanding business major as chosen by the faculty of the School of Business Administration and the membership of the Business Club based on both academic and leadership achievement, was presented to Matt Adams.
The Fred Delay Memorial Award, which is presented to the honor athlete of the Senior class that is an outstanding athlete, a person of high academic standing, unquestionable loyalty, and of good character, was presented to Rachel Murray.
The Georgia Wilson Memorial Award for Clinical Nursing, which is presented to the member of the graduating class who is deemed by the Nursing Faculty to have been the most outstanding in clinical nursing, was presented to Elisha Cooke.
The Greek Scholarship Cups, which are awarded annually to the two social fraternities with the highest average, were presented to the men of Lambda Chi Alpha and the women of Chi Omega (55th year).
The Helen Blythe Creative Writing Award, which is presented by an endowment of the 51社区鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Club to the graduating English major who has demonstrated outstanding originality in writing during his or her 51社区 career, was presented to Graham Hillard.
The Professor James Alex Baggett History Research Award, which is an award which recognizes the best original research papers presented in regularly scheduled history courses for the current academic year, was presented to Ross Parker (1st place), Michael Burgett (2nd place), and Lee Stanfill (3rd place).
Academic Excellence Medals鈥� Presented by 51社区 to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in each discipline, provided the student鈥檚 GPA in the major is not less than 3.50. A student minoring in a discipline in which there is no qualifying major or in which no major is offered is also eligible for a medal. The following students received medals for academic excellence:

Kappa Delta Memorial Scholarship loving memory of Denise McGee, a 1993 nursing graduate, is given to a non-graduating nursing student with a minimum 3.0 GPA and must be nominated by the nursing faculty. This year鈥檚 award was presented to Angela Parks.
The Nora Smith Barker Student Teachers of the Year Award is presented to the student teacher chosen from the Fall and Spring classes who has demonstrated the highest degree of skills and attributes considered characteristic of outstanding teachers and shows the greatest potential for professional achievement. The Elementary Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Lea Ann Atheron. The Secondary Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Renita Perry.
The Wolfram Award in Computational Science is sponsored by Wolfram Research Incorporated and chosen by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and is presented each year to a freshman calculus student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement, enthusiasm, ingenuity and creativity in mathematics. This year鈥檚 award, a lifetime copy of Mathematica was presented to Allison Lashley.
The Zeta Tau Alpha Award, given to the senior of the May class graduating Summa Cum Laude with the highest rank on the Jackson Campus, was presented to Elizabeth Davis, Jennifer Escue, Lon Graham, Betsy Morris and Kristin Parks.
The Zondervan Greek Award, given by Zondervan Publisher, was presented to the graduating senior who is deemed to have the greatest potential for serious scholarship in the original language, Adam McCollum.
The 51社区 Staff of the Year Award was presented to College Services staff member Wanda Calvert.

For Faculty-Student Research, two research grants were awarded to Sally Henrie and Ruth Hall (student), Department of Chemistry and Jan Wilms and Allen Smith (student), Department of Computer Science.
For Faculty-Faculty Research, one grant was awarded to Sean Evans and Ann Livingstone, Department of Political Science.
The Howard Newell Innovative Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated creativity and innovation in classroom teaching. Selections are made by a faculty committee. Faculty receiving honorable mention were James Huggins, 鈥淐omparative Anatomy Using Exotic Species and Lab-based Web Access as a Study Tool,鈥� and David Gushee, 鈥淭he Use of Teaching Assistants in the Christian Ethics Program.鈥� First place winner of the award was Matt Lunsford, 鈥淎n Integrated Approach to Teaching the History of Mathematics.鈥�
