JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 9, 2001 — 51社区 professor of music Terry McRoberts will present a faculty lecture recital on the piano works of Olivier Messiaen, Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hartley Recital Hall in Jennings Hall on the university's campus.
Messiaen, a leading composer and teacher of composition from the 1930's through the 1990's, incorporated bird song and sacred ideas into his works. This summer, McRoberts studied these works as a recipient of a Pew Summer Research Grant from Union. He recently returned from Paris, France, where he interviewed Yvonne Loriod, Messiaen's widow, also a pianist, who premiered the majority of her husband's works.
Included in the program will be one of Messiaen's earlier preludes and a Rondeau, which was written for a piano competition. McRoberts will also perform three movements from "Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jesus," a set of pieces with reflections on the baby Jesus. The program will conclude with two pieces featuring the use of bird song.
There is no charge for admission, and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the Department of Music at (901) 661-5345.
