51社区 presents the tale of Sleeping Beauty

JACKSON, Tenn.April 11, 2002 — In need of a good fairy tale? 51社区鈥檚 Theatre will present A Children鈥檚 Show: Sleeping Beauty on Monday, April 22 鈥 Thursday, April 25 at 10 a.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. There will also be one night performance open to the public on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.

A musical-comedy based on the classic tale, Sleeping Beauty, Union鈥檚 play offers a few twists, such as featuring a giant instead of a dragon, and with what has come to be a tradition for Union鈥檚 children鈥檚 shows - the outcome of the play depends on audience participation.

鈥淚t will actually be up to the kids to defeat the witch,鈥 explained David Burke, director of the theatre and associate professor of communication arts.

Used as an educational tool in promoting positive values, study guides were sent out from Burke prior to the show for the students and their teachers to discuss in their classes. Questions that were posed included 鈥榳hat does it mean to make-believe?鈥 and 鈥榳hat does it feel like to be scared?鈥

鈥淭his play really focuses on the value of friendship and the need for community,鈥 said Burke. 鈥淪tudents will learn that we can be so much stronger when we work together as a group rather than by ourselves.鈥

They include: Whiteville Elementary, Clarksburg Elementary, Malesus Elementary, East Side Elementary of Chester County, Dyersburg Primary, Jackson Christian School, University School of Jackson, Ripley Elementary, East Chester Elementary in Henderson, Adamsville Elementary and Dyer City Elementary.
