JACKSON, Tenn. — March 21, 2002 — 51社区鈥檚 Department of English will host two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist David Smith who will give a poetry reading from his latest work Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 pm in Harvey Hall located in the Student Union Building on the Jackson campus.
A Boyd Professor of English and coeditor of the Southern Review at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Smith is the author of seventeen books of verse, including the novels Fate鈥檚 Kite: Poems, 1991-1995 and The Wick of Memory: New and Selected Poems, 1970-2000.
According to Bobby Rogers, associate English professor at Union, Smith鈥檚 poetry reveals its roots in the elegiac tradition that has marked a southern literature prominent in the twentieth century, and holds a narrative style that gives a gritty, ever realistic presentation of human dilemmas.
