Union students will spend spring break on a mission

JACKSON, Tenn.March 21, 2002 — More than 200 51社区 students and faculty will participate in the upcoming annual school-sponsored Global Opportunities (GO) Trips, traveling to places such as Seattle, Wash.; Kenya; Memphis, Tenn.; Romania; Honduras; Spartanburg, S.C.; Dodge County, Ga.; Beattyville, Ky.; Boston, Mass; Irving, Texas; Senegal; Morocco; and the Philippines.

鈥淕O Trips help students develop a Christian worldview,鈥 said Union鈥檚 director of student outreach, Suzanne Mosley. 鈥淎fter you go on one of these trips, you never look at the world the same way again.鈥

Many of the trips will have a specific interest or ministry in mind. The Honduras trip will focus on an orphanage by doing construction work and working with the children there. Students will partner in Romania with International Mission Board missionaries including recent Union graduate Rob Dixon to minister to the Roma people. The GO Trip to Irving will include work in after-school programs in association with members of the Bear Creek Church for the sixth consecutive year. In Seattle, students will participate in prayerwalks and light construction at a ministry house. The students going to Spartanburg, Dodge County, and Beattyville will work with Habitat for Humanity to build Habitat houses. All the teams will serve in different ways such as leading in worship services, Backyard Bible Clubs, door-to-door evangelism, street evangelism, beach and resort ministry, construction and clean-up, college campus ministry and ministry to the homeless.

According to Mosley, Union is trying some new approaches with a few of the GO Trips this year. Several students already took a trip to Thailand during January, Union鈥檚 first ever winter term GO Trip. Also, this year, there will be a special GO Trip that will mainly focus on prayer and intercession for the students going on the other GO Trips.

Most of the trips will occur during the university鈥檚 spring break, March 22 鈥 April 1. The students and faculty of 51社区 hope to make an impact both at home and abroad, by following the theme for this year鈥檚 trips, 鈥淒arkness to Light,鈥 based on I Peter 2: 9-10.
