Baker to address Union graduates at May 4 commencement

JACKSON, Tenn.April 29, 2024 — Hunter Baker, provost and dean of faculty at North Greenville University and former dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at 51社区, will deliver the commencement address as part of Union鈥檚 spring graduation ceremonies May 4 on the Great Lawn.

Baker joined the Union faculty in 2010 as senior associate dean of arts and sciences and associate professor of political science. He held a variety of roles at Union during his tenure, including associate provost and dean of instruction, before becoming NGU鈥檚 provost earlier this year.

He is the author of three books 鈥 鈥淭he System Has a Soul: Essays on Christianity, Liberty, and Political Life,鈥 鈥淧olitical Thought: A Student鈥檚 Guide鈥 and 鈥淭he End of Secularism鈥 鈥 and has contributed articles to such publications as Christianity Today, The Federalist, The Gospel Coalition, First Things, National Review, Touchstone, Modern Age, the Journal of Law and Religion and Perspectives in Political Science, among others.

Baker earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in economics and political science from Florida State University, his master鈥檚 degree in public administration from the University of Georgia, his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in religion, politics and society from Baylor University.

He and his wife Ruth have a son, Andrew, and a daughter, Grace, who is a student at Union.

The ceremony for graduate and adult studies students, including MCUTS, BSOL and associate degrees, will begin at 2 p.m. The ceremony for all undergraduates (excluding BSOL students) will begin at 6 p.m. Both ceremonies will take place on Union鈥檚 Great Lawn and will be shown live at .
