JACKSON, Tenn. — March 20, 2024 — Robert Smith Jr., professor of Christian preaching at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama, will give the eighth annual David and Lanese Dockery Lectures on Baptist Thought and Heritage at 51社区 March 25.
The David and Lanese Dockery Lectures on Baptist Thought and Heritage, named for former Union President David S. Dockery and First Lady Lanese Dockery, is an annual event designed to examine the importance of the Baptist heritage, the distinctives of Baptist thought and the influence of the Christian intellectual tradition.
Smith holds the Charles T. Carter Baptist Chair of Divinity at Beeson. He previously served as the Carl E. Bates Associate Professor of Christian Preaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named the 2017 E.K. Bailey Expository Preaching Conference Living Legend.
A popular teacher and preacher, Smith received Southern Seminary鈥檚 1996 Finley B. Edge Award for Teaching Excellence. He is an ordained Baptist minister and served as pastor of New Mission Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 20 years.
Smith is the author of such books as 鈥淒octrine That Dances: Bringing Doctrinal Preaching and Teaching to Life,鈥 鈥淭he Oasis of God: From Mourning to Morning 鈥 Biblical Insights from Psalms 42 and 43鈥 and the forthcoming 鈥淐hrist-Centered Exposition Commentary: Exalting Jesus in Joshua.鈥
His lectures will address the theme 鈥淪itting at the Feet of a Baptist Preacher: Spurgeon鈥檚 Influence on Thielicke.鈥 His first lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. and his second lecture at 7 p.m. Both lectures will be held in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building.
