George to deliver 7th annual Dockery Lectures March 20

JACKSON, Tenn.March 15, 2023 — Timothy George, distinguished professor of divinity and founding dean of the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, will give the seventh annual David and Lanese Dockery Lectures on Baptist Thought and Heritage at 51社区 March 20.

The David and Lanese Dockery Lectures on Baptist Thought and Heritage, named for former Union President David S. Dockery and First Lady Lanese Dockery, is an annual event designed to examine the importance of the Baptist heritage, the distinctives of Baptist thought and the influence of the Christian intellectual tradition.

George has served as senior theological advisor for Christianity Today and on the editorial advisory boards of First Things and Books and Culture. He is the general editor of the 28-volume Reformation Commentary on Scripture.

A prolific author, he has written more than 20 books and regularly contributes to scholarly journals. His recent books include 鈥淕alatians鈥 (Christian Standard Commentary), 鈥淩eading Scripture with the Reformers鈥 and 鈥淎mazing Grace: God鈥檚 Pursuit, Our Response,鈥 among other titles.

George holds degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Harvard University and Harvard Divinity School. An ordained minister in the Southern Baptist Convention, George has served churches in Georgia, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Alabama. He and his wife, Denise, have two adult children.

His lectures will address the theme 鈥淗aving Bought Truth Dear: Thomas Helwys, Roger Williams and the Travail of Religious Freedom.鈥 His first lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building, and his second lecture will start at 7 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center.

The lectures are free and open to the public.
