JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 26, 2022 — 51社区 is like a tree planted by water that has withstood the test of time and that stands tall amongst other academic institutions, Randy Davis said Sept. 23 during a chapel service celebrating the university鈥檚 bicentennial.
鈥淭he mission statement of 51社区 says we will provide a Christ-centered education,鈥� said Davis, president and executive director of the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board. 鈥淲hat I'm so thankful for today is that for 200 years, 51社区, because of the courage and commitment of its leadership, has not drifted from its original mission.鈥�
51社区 students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel for the event. The bicentennial chapel service focused on celebrating Union鈥檚 history and legacy throughout the years while also thanking God for the school鈥檚 success over the past two centuries.
The Bicentennial Celebration included worship led by the Tennessee Men鈥檚 Chorale as well as a message from Davis. The bicentennial chapel service began a year-long series of events dedicated to celebrating 200 years since Union鈥檚 founding in 1823.
Davis鈥� message celebrated the strength of Union and highlighted God鈥檚 goodness over the past two centuries. He referenced Psalm 1:1-3 throughout his message, comparing Union to a strong tree with deep roots.
鈥淭here鈥檚 been scars of pandemics鈥here have been world wars; there have been massive tornados,鈥� Davis said, citing the trials in Union鈥檚 history. 鈥淭his institution has gone through many difficult times.鈥�
Davis credited Union鈥檚 Christian roots for allowing the institution to withstand many difficult circumstances. He expressed gratitude that Union has held Christian values over the course of two centuries.
Davis concluded the chapel service by asking all current students and alumni to stand.
鈥淵ou are why Union was started. You are why Union exists,鈥� Davis said, addressing those standing. "Just as Jesus Christ had you on his heart 2,000 years ago, the founders of Union had you on their hearts [at Union鈥檚 founding].鈥�
