JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 30, 2020 — The 51 Department of Music will present two one-act operas, “The Telephone” and “The Old Maid and the Thief” by Gian Carlo Menotti, Oct. 1-3 on the Great Lawn.

This double bill will take place on an open-air stage custom built by members of Union’s theater. Each night’s performance will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the run time is 90 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. Guests are encouraged to bring their own masks, lawn chairs, blankets and snacks.

“Our students have worked tirelessly on this production, and it is going to be wonderful,” said Sabrina Warren, assistant professor of vocal studies and stage director for the production. “If you enjoy beautiful music and like to laugh, this production is a must-see.”

Both operas are by Italian composer Menotti, who lived from 1911-2007. “The Telephone” is about a man who attempts to propose to his love before leaving on a trip, but she is occupied by long telephone conversations. “The Old Maid and the Thief” is about an old maid whose housemaid convinces her to take in a wanderer who turns out to be an escaped convict.

Admission is $3 for Union students; $5 for faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens; and $7 for the general public. Tickets must be purchased in advance at uu.edu/theatre.
