JACKSON, Tenn.March 2, 2020 — The 51社区 College of Pharmacy鈥檚 class of 2019 received a 100 percent pass rate for first-time attempts on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination. Union is one of only three pharmacy schools in the U.S. to achieve a 100 percent pass rate this year out of 140 schools and the only one in the Southeast to do so.

Issued by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the NAPLEX is a standard examination used to measure candidates鈥 knowledge of the practice of pharmacy and is one component of the pharmacy licensure process. The national average NAPLEX first-time pass rate in 2019 was 88.34 percent for all graduates from programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.

鈥淚t is actually rare and quite difficult to reach this benchmark because the scores are solely dependent upon each individual student鈥檚 performance on his or her exam,鈥 said Sheila Mitchell, founding dean for Union鈥檚 College of Pharmacy and past-president and member of the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy.

Mitchell noted that the College of Pharmacy also achieved a 100 percent first-time pass rate in 2014. The passing score for the NAPLEX is 75 or higher. The average score for UUCOP鈥檚 class of 2019 was 104.43, which is about 10 points higher than the national average score of 94.68. Eighty-four percent of Union鈥檚 students scored above the national average.

鈥淭his accomplishment provides indisputable evidence that all of our graduates are 鈥榩ractice-ready鈥 when they complete our program,鈥 Mitchell said. 鈥淚t assures potential incoming students that selecting to pursue their pharmacy education at 51社区 College of Pharmacy is a wise and sound investment of their time and resources, because we have a proven track record of success and excellence.鈥
