JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 22, 2019 — Union’s Department of Music will offer two Christmas concerts this holiday season that are free and open to the public: Handel’s “Messiah,” Dec. 3, and the annual Union Christmas concert, Dec. 6.
Two ensembles from the Department of Music, the University Singers and the University Symphony Orchestra, will be featured in the “Messiah” concert on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 7:30-9 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. “Messiah” is a beloved, historic piece of music telling the story of Christ’s life that has been performed through the centuries.
“It should be a wonderful time to commemorate in a historic context the birth of Christ through music and song and Scripture,” said John Kinchen, chair of the Department of Music and director for choral activities.
The Department of Music will continue its tradition of the annual Union Christmas by presenting an evening concert of contemporary Christmas favorites performed by Union’s choral ensembles (including Sounds of Exaltation, Voices of Proclamation, the University Singers, Jubilate and the Union Gospel Singers) and the full symphony orchestra on Friday, Dec. 6, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. The concert will also include congregational singing and a candle-lighting portion.
“The opportunity that we have to gather together in the name of Jesus Christ is always an important part of who we are as an institution and reaching into our community,” Kinchen said. “We’re part of the community here, and we want to invite folks to be a part of what this is as a meaningful part of their celebration of Christmas.”
