Union adds two new summer camps

JACKSON, Tenn.April 25, 2019 — 51社区 is adding an engineering camp and a health sciences camp to its summer camps schedule this year.

The engineering camp will take place June 17-21 and is designed for students in grades 6-12. Campers will learn about different aspects of engineering as they study and create a 3D printed model of a combustion engine. Georg Pingen, associate professor of engineering, said the camp will introduce students to engineering in a fun, hands-on way.

鈥淭hey will be exposed to what engineering is and learn a useful skill in 3D printing and modeling,鈥 Pingen said. 鈥淭hey鈥檒l be able to build a model, print it out and make it come alive.鈥

The health sciences camp will take place June 9-12 and incorporate Union鈥檚 College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy. It is designed for older high school students to get hands-on, real-life training as they explore careers in nursing, pharmacy or other health fields.

鈥淚t will expose students to the health sciences and the way we train our students,鈥 said Kristina Martin, director for pharmacy outreach and student support in the College of Pharmacy. 鈥淲e learn by doing, and they鈥檒l be in the labs and on-site getting first-hand experience in how this stuff works in the real world.鈥

The students will spend time touring hospital and pharmacy settings and working in simulation, gross anatomy, compounding and other labs to practice what they learn.

Union will also offer youth summer camps for art, music, baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball. Children鈥檚 summer camps will include art, music, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball as well as an all sports rec camp.
