JACKSON, Tenn.March 11, 2019 — High school senior Matthias Hargrave of Waco, Texas, has received the 2019 Founders’ Scholarship from 51 that covers full tuition, room, meals and student services fees for four years.

The scholarship came from Union’s Scholars of Excellence competition which draws the highest qualified prospective students to campus for a weekend of interviews and other activities.

Hargrave, a home schooled student who is the son of Richard and Nicky Hargrave, plans to major in theological studies and linguistics when he begins at Union in the fall. He learned about Union during the time he lived in the United Kingdom with his family thanks to their friendship with Brad Green, professor of theological studies at Union.

His visit to campus for the first time, Hargrave said, is what “blew me away.” He was encouraged by the people he met and attracted to Union’s pursuit of excellence.

“The excellence-driven commitment and the Christian, welcoming, family environment are the two key things that really drew me in,” Hargrave said.

Hargrave is a member of Waco Family Baptist Church.

The Founders’ Scholarship is Union’s highest academic scholarship. Recipients must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average at Union and are required to perform up to 50 hours of leadership services for the university each semester.
