JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 8, 2018 — Melvyn Leffler, the Edward Stettinius Professor of American History at the University of Virginia, will speak at the 2018 Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Oct. 22 at 51社区.
Leffler鈥檚 main lecture, 鈥淩onald Reagan and the End of the Cold War鈥 will begin at 7:15 p.m. in Union鈥檚 G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. He will also speak at 2 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center on 鈥淗arry Truman and the Origins of the Cold War.鈥
A book signing will follow the evening presentation. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Leffler has written extensively on the Cold War and on American foreign policy from 1917 to the present, including two prize-winning books, 鈥淔or the Soul of Mankind: The United States, the Soviet Union, and the Cold War鈥 (2007) and 鈥淎 Preponderance of Power: National Security, the Truman Administration, and the Cold War鈥 (1992), among other titles.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in history from Ohio State University and previously taught at Vanderbilt University before moving to the history department at the University of Virginia. He has been a visiting professor at both Oxford University and Cambridge University in Great Britain.
