JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 1, 2018 — The 51 Players will present “Prometheus Bound” in the W.D. Powell Theatre Oct. 4-9.
Written by the Greek playwright Aeschylus and adapted by James Scully and John Herrington, “Prometheus Bound” addresses the theme of the conflict between force and justice. In the play, the supreme god Zeus has assumed control of the universe from the Titans and is ruling like a petty tyrant.
He has bound Prometheus to a rock in a remote corner of the earth because Prometheus gave the gift of fire to humans, a race that Zeus had sought to destroy.
“Overall the play is about the misuse of power in an unjust way -- a very relevant topic today,” said David Burke, professor of theater at Union and director of the play. “It is also hopeful in an incarnational way that in their future the true God will reveal himself to the point that humans will no longer have to create multiple gods in our own image. In other words, it gets deep.”
Cast members include Jacob Beals, Benjamin Phillips, Susannah Murphine, Ian Maupin and Crista Wilhite, among others. Cheyanne Harber will serve as the stage manager.
Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 8-9, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Oct. 6. Tickets are $7 in advance for general admission or $9 on the day of the show. Student tickets are $5 in advance or $7 on the day of the show. Tickets are available online at or by calling the box office at (731) 661-5105.
