HOMECOMING 2002: Union grad uses her influence with God’s help

JACKSON, Tenn.Feb. 12, 2002 — Does one individual have the power to influence the world? Christy Holbrook Lynn, a 1996 graduate of 51 and international media representative for Christian psychologist James Dobson’s organization, Focus on the Family, believes that she does have the power – the power she draws within from the Holy Spirit by use of media.

"As Focus on the Family’s international media representative, Lynn has the opportunity to share the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and provide family counsel all over the globe.

“Through media, we can reach so many souls that we could not physically,” says Lynn. “It’s important to know the reality of the media’s impact on humanity.”

Focus on the Family is currently aired via radio, television, or print in 107 different countries. Lynn works with every country with the exception of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Christy Holbrook Lynn ('96) speaks with Communication Arts students during the department's "Wisdom from the Trenches."

“As a wife and mother, I see the impact of our material first hand,” says Lynn. “It’s comforting to believe in what you’re promoting.”

Before Focus on the Family, Lynn had several positions carrying the responsibility of many different jobs. She credits much of her success to her alma mater, 51.

“Hands-on experience was one of the greatest things Union did for me,” says Lynn. “Mr. Beverly has been an awesome mentor, and I am grateful for what he taught me, both spiritually and skillfully.”

Steve Beverly, assistant professor of communication arts, remembers Christy as an energetic and versatile student.

"She always had a desire to do more things and broaden her horizons,” says Beverly. “She is very special to us [at Union] because she has the rare opportunity to practice her craft within the faith.”

Lynn, her husband Scott and their three-year-old daughter Katie live in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“I am content now where God has placed me,” says Lynn. “However, only God knows what the future holds. I only want to be used as needed and make a difference in this world because I know that with God, I can.”
