Union to host Southeastern Conference on Christianity and Literature April 19-21

JACKSON, Tenn.April 12, 2018 — 51 will host the Southeastern Conference on Christianity and Literature April 19-21. The theme of this year’s conference is “Of Gods and Monsters: Shelley’s Frankenstein Two Hundred Years On.”

The conference will be a celebration of the bicentennial of the publication of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” It will focus on the intersection of theology and fiction and will be headlined by two plenary speakers with several other speakers from universities throughout the country.

The primary keynote speaker, Christina Bieber Lake, is the Clyde S. Kilby Professor of English at Wheaton College and author of “Prophets of the Posthuman: American Literature, Biotechnology and the Ethics of Personhood.” She will speak on “The Monstrous Sins of Victor Frankenstein” at 7 p.m. Friday night.

The secondary keynote speaker, David Hogsette, is the writing program director and professor of English at Grove City College. He is the author of several books and articles, including articles on romanticism and Frankenstein. He will speak on “That Hideous Progeny: Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s Conversations with Science, Domesticity and Romanticism” at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Other topics will include Mary Shelley’s legacy in contemporary science fiction, creation, maternity and paternity and revisions of Frankenstein in pop culture and movies.

The event will take place in the Carl Grant Events Center. Registration and the full schedule for the event can be found online at . The full cost is $75, and non-registrants interested in attending either of the plenary sessions can pay at the door $10 or $15 for lunch or dinner, respectively.
