JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 7, 2017 — The 51 Players will present “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” a play based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Nov. 9-14 in the W.D. Powell Theatre on the Union campus.
“The minor characters of Hamlet become the major characters of this play,” said David Burke, professor of theater at Union who will direct the production. “It’s an existential play, and it’s a dark comedy that’s about death.”
Written by Tom Stoppard, the play opened in New York in 1967.
“The play raises a lot more questions than it does answers, which in some ways is good for us,” Burke said. “Then you can go and kind of contemplate the answers.”
Cast members include Jake Beals as Rosencrantz and Samuel Edgren as Guildenstern, in addition to Mary Grace Slonecker, Rebecca Duttweiler, Sullivan Hogan, Anna Hughes, Susannah Murphine, Joey Echeverria, Jeb Cox, Ian Malone, Cayley Cantwell, James Martin, Hannah Brandt, Grant Weingart and Abigail Jameson.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. each night, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Nov. 12 and an additional late-night performance at 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 10. A discussion will take place after each performance.
General admission tickets are $7 in advance or $9 at the door, with discounted tickets for Union students, faculty and staff. Tickets are available for online purchase at .
