JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 11, 2017 — 51社区 will host a residential English language immersion program this summer for learners seeking greater English proficiency for the classroom, the workplace and life in the United States.

Sponsored by Union鈥檚 Center for Intercultural Engagement, the Intensive English Summer Certificate Program will consist of a series of pre-university-level courses addressing academic reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening.

Phillip Ryan, acting director of the center, said the program is design to enhance English and academic English proficiency through an enriching cross-cultural experience.

鈥淯nion hasn鈥檛 offered intensive English programming in 20 years, so we鈥檙e most excited about bringing it back in 2017,鈥 Ryan said. 鈥淭his program is designed for individuals who want to increase their English language proficiency without having to enroll in a degree-seeking, credit-bearing program.鈥

During the month-long program, students will live in Union鈥檚 campus housing, eat meals in the Union cafeteria and have access to the university鈥檚 student services, including recreational facilities, the library, computer labs and the university medical clinic.

The four courses students will take during the program are 鈥淐ritical Reading Skills for the 21st Century Classroom,鈥 鈥淎 Sociocultural Approach to Writing in English,鈥 鈥淐ommunicative Approaches to English Grammar鈥 and 鈥淐ross-cultural Conversations for a Globalized Community.鈥 Students will spend 89 hours in the classroom and on planned weekend excursions.

The program runs July 19-August 17. Students who complete the program receive a program completion certificate at a concluding ceremony, and all students will be given a non-degree-seeking, program-specific transcript.
