JACKSON, Tenn. — May 20, 2016 —
Hunter Martin, a 2015 Union graduate and Master of Accountancy student, was named the inaugural winner of the Internal Auditor magazine鈥檚 scholarship essay contest.
Martin will receive a $1,000 scholarship and have his winning essay published in an upcoming edition of the magazine.
鈥淭his is a great accomplishment for Hunter and for the McAfee School of Business Administration,鈥 said Karen Miller, director of academic research and professor of accounting. 鈥淥ne of our goals is for our students to be able to communicate in written and oral form, and this shows that they are doing that.鈥
Martin鈥檚 essay is entitled 鈥淚PPF Update Clears the Smudges on the Window Looking Into the World of Internal Auditing鈥 and analyzes an update to an internal auditing framework. He said he wrote and submitted the essay as part of Miller鈥檚 internal auditing class, and he was shocked when he learned he had won the contest.
鈥淚 was excited not only about the scholarship aspect of it, but I was excited to become a published author,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a dream of mine to be a published author.鈥
Miller said she required her students to take part in the contest because she wants them to have the research skills to find and analyze information.
鈥淎ccounting is always changing,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith research, these students can continue to learn and be at the forefront of the field after they graduate.鈥
Martin said Miller has made sure her students understand internal auditing, and she gave them real-world, practical experience in the area. He said Union has given him a good foundation to on how to think deeply about topics and write collegiately.
鈥淚鈥檓 glad 51社区 and the McAfee School of Business Administration were able to get some well-deserved recognition,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚鈥檓 just thankful to have been a part of that.鈥
The essay contest included students from across the country. In addition to Martin鈥檚 win, three other Union students were recognized as top five finalists: Hannah Conway, Caitlin Inman and Joshua Sander.
