Social Work Awareness Day set for March 10

JACKSON, Tenn.March 4, 2016 — 51社区鈥檚 School of Social Work will host a Social Work Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 10 in the hallway of the Barefoot Student Union Building.

Students will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from 22 social services agencies in the area. Each agency will have an exhibit with information about its work.

The agencies will include assisted living communities, substance abuse agencies, school systems, child welfare programs, mental health centers, suicide prevention groups, domestic violence prevention groups and many others.

Kay Montgomery, visiting assistant professor of social work, said the awareness day is designed to give students networking opportunities with these organizations, most of which are non-profits.

Students will learn about social services in the area and get information on employment, internship and volunteer opportunities. They will also learn about current legislation affecting social services.

A representative from the Tennessee chapter of the National Association of Social Workers will be available to answer questions and provide more information about social work efforts in West Tennessee.

Montgomery encouraged all students to take part in the Social Work Awareness Day. She said the networking opportunities will be especially beneficial to students studying nursing, education, sociology and psychology.

The event will include popcorn, games and door prizes.
