JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 10, 2016 — Gerardo Marti of Davidson College will deliver the Scholar-in-Residence lectures at 51 beginning Feb. 16 on the topic of “Innovation, Orthodoxy, and Tradition: The Near Future of American Christianity.”
Marti is the L. Richardson King associate professor and chair of sociology at Davidson. He is an ethnographer whose research centers on race, ethnicity, innovation and social change in congregational life. In addition to several peer-reviewed journal articles, he is the author of “A Mosaic of Believers,” “Hollywood Faith,” “Worship Across the Racial Divide” and “The Deconstructed Church.”
Marti was the recipient of a Religious Institutions Grant from The Louisville Institute and an Engaged Scholars Fellowship from The Congregational Studies Project Team for research focusing on social scientific analysis of worship and music in racially diverse congregations.
A graduate of Pepperdine University with a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Southern California, Gerardo is also an ordained pastor with 10 years of experience ministering in churches of various sizes and ethnic and racial compositions.

• Feb. 25, 7 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium, “The Future of Innovation and the Church.”
