JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 17, 2015 — 51社区鈥檚 School of Pharmacy was recently selected to receive the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy 2015 Student Community Engaged Service Award, recognizing its work within the West Tennessee community.

The award-winning project is an effort entitled 鈥淧roject Population Health and Rural Medicine,鈥 (PHaRM) which is housed within the School of Pharmacy鈥檚 Center for Interprofessional Education/Population Health and Rural Medicine.

The purpose of Project PHaRM is to advance the School of Pharmacy鈥檚 ability to better care for the underserved population of West Tennessee. Among other goals, the project addresses how pharmacists, social workers and nurses can better collaborate, and it seeks to improve the consumption behavior of patients鈥 cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes medications.

Sean King, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, was the faculty mentor for the project, and Erica Rogers, a research associate within the Center, also provided leadership.

鈥淲e are indeed honored to receive this prestigious award, which speaks to the recognition of the work of the 51社区 School of Pharmacy by the academy as premier among pharmacy schools across the nation,鈥 said Sheila Mitchell, dean of the Union School of Pharmacy. 鈥淭he School of Pharmacy was established at the request of the healthcare community of West Tennessee. Therefore, this award is particularly meaningful in that it recognizes excellence of the work of our students within the community of Jackson and West Tennessee."

The Student Community Engaged Service Award was presented in July during the AACP annual meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. The award included a crystal sculpture for the School of Pharmacy, certificates for the faculty adviser and students and a $5,000 prize to be used for community service projects.
