JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 14, 2002 — 51社区 will hold a special service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 21, in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. Local pastor Rev. Ben Cox, Sr., will bring the message.
Cox was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders in 1961, led by the Congress of Racial Equality which integrated travel in 17 Southern states. A life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Cox is the founder and director of the Human Relations Center, and worked closely with the late Martin Luther King, Jr. on three different occasions in pursuit of civil rights.
A graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., Cox received his master's of divinity from the Divinity School at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He currently is a teacher at Madison County Academy in Jackson and attends New Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church, also in Jackson.
