Award-winning author to visit Union

JACKSON, Tenn.March 31, 2014 — Award-winning author Bret Lott will present a workshop and reading at 51社区 April 24.

Lott, professor of English at The College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., is the author of 14 books, including 鈥淛ewel,鈥 which was featured as a selection for Oprah鈥檚 Book Club in 1999. He also has recently published an essay collection titled 鈥淟etters and Life: On Being a Writer, On Being a Christian.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to have Lott at Union for reasons beyond the millions of books he鈥檚 sold,鈥 said David Malone, associate professor of English. 鈥淗e鈥檚 an accomplished, conscientious writer who depicts his characters with clarity and empathy.鈥

The workshop will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. in Room A-1 in the Penick Academic Complex. The reading will follow at 7:30 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building. The events are free and open to the public.

Lott will be featured as part of Lyceum, a campus-wide arts committee consisting of students and faculty. Past featured artists include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Wright, ceramic artist Ron Meyers and novelist Betty Smartt Carter.

鈥淧art of the Union English department鈥檚 mission is to bring in notable writers to share their vision for their art with our campus and the greater West Tennessee community,鈥 Malone said. 鈥淲e know anyone who attends the readings by Bret Lott will be impressed by how deeply a writer鈥檚 faith can inform his or her work.鈥
