Town & Gown Lectures to analyze Bach’s cantatas

JACKSON, Tenn.March 14, 2014 — 51’s Town and Gown Lecture Series will focus on Johann Sebastian Bach’s sacred cantatas with a series of lectures on Tuesday evenings from March 18 – April 22.

The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The sessions are free and open to the public.

The upcoming lectures will reveal how Bach’s beliefs impacted his music, said Joshua Veltman, associate professor of music.

“Bach’s music shows us that intellectual rigor and heartfelt devotion to God are not mutually exclusive but go hand in hand,” Veltman said. “This is an essential lesson at a place like Union that strives for the integration of faith and learning.”

Most sessions will be held in Providence Hall Room 160 from 6-10 p.m., with one lecture on April 15 scheduled to occur in Hartley Recital Hall in Jennings Hall.

The schedule for the series is:

  • March 18: An introduction with Veltman, followed by his presentation of “Christian Perspectives on Studying Old Music,” “The Life and Career of J. S. Bach” and “Cantata 199.”
  • March 25: “Bach’s Germany: Luther and the Reformation” with James Patterson, university professor of Christian Thought and Tradition, followed by “Congregational Singing in Reformation Germany,” “Cantata 61” and “Cantata 4” with Veltman.
  • April 8: “The St. Matthew Passion” with Calvin Stapert, professor emeritus of music at Calvin College, followed by “The Heidelberg Catechism” and “Cantata 77” with Veltman.
  • April 15: “Performing the Music of Bach” with Stanley Warren, professor of music, in Hartley Hall, followed by “Baroque Voices and Instruments,” “Cantata 147” and “Cantata 56” with Veltman.
  • April 22: Student presentations, followed by “Cantata 140” and “Mass in B Minor” with Veltman.
