Former Navy psychologist to speak about mental health care

JACKSON, Tenn.Nov. 4, 2013 — Former Navy psychologist Heidi Squier Kraft will speak at 51社区 Nov. 7 about mental health care needs for the military community.

Kraft, a nationally known speaker concerning post-traumatic stress disorder, joined the Navy as a flight and clinical psychologist. She was later deployed to Iraq for seven months with a Marine Corps surgical company in 2004 鈥 an experience from which she wrote a memoir, 鈥淩ule Number Two.鈥

Kraft will discuss mental health care for military personnel and their families as a 鈥減ressing social issue,鈥 said Mary Anne Poe, the acting associate dean of social work.

鈥淭he needs are great,鈥 said Poe, who also serves as a social work professor and the Center for Just and Caring Communities director. 鈥淲e are pleased to have an opportunity to offer this lecture at Union.鈥

The lecture, hosted by the School of Social Work, will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Harvey Auditorium in the Student Union Building.

Kraft also will attend a program hosted by the Jackson-Madison Country Library Program Center earlier that day, including a lunch at 11 a.m. and a book signing at noon.
