With more than 25
special concerts, recitals and shows to be held this spring, Union
University's newly released 2001 spring arts calendar lineup promises much
in the way of entertainment and culture for the local community.
Union's Department of Art will hold four different art exhibits throughout the semester including a joint show by metal sculpture artist Joel Peterson and painter Tony Novak beginning Feb. 13. Painter Barry Motes will display his art exhibit in the 51社区 Art Gallery beginning Mar. 19. Other planned exhibits include senior shows by graduating Union students as well as an undergraduate student show planned in May.
The Department of Communication Arts will present a group of student-directed one acts Feb. 1 - 2, and two major theatre performances this spring. In March, Shakespeare's Othello will be performed, opening Mar. 8 and running through Mar. 13. In April, the play Night Watch, by Lucille Fletcher, will run April 26 through May 1. For both shows, admission is $3 for students and $7 for the general public, with shows starting at 8 p.m. each evening, with the exception of Sunday matinees which will begin at 2:30 p.m.
If music is one's forte, the Department of Music will offer numerous opportunities for musical enjoyment, including several faculty and guest recitals in addition to student choral and ensemble performances throughout the semester. The 51社区 Madrigal Players will present a "Mid-Winter Frolic," with dinner and a Renaissance look to the past, Feb. 9-10. For those who enjoy Southern Gospel music and hymn sing-alongs, a Sacred Harp Sing will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 starting at 9:30 a.m. The annual Bach's Lunch series will begin on Wednesday, Mar. 7, with special performances by music faculty and students held weekly throughout the month of March during lunchtime. In May, the annual symphonic band and jazz band concerts will both be held.
