Phi Alpha Theta wins Best Chapter Award for 11th straight year

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 15, 2013 — 51社区鈥檚 Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta won the Best Chapter Award for the 11th consecutive year from the national history honor society.

Delta-Psi members received a $250 check to purchase history books for Union鈥檚 Emma Waters Summar Library. Currently, the chapter has contributed $2,750 to the library鈥檚 book collection, with more than 75 books having been donated.

鈥淭he award reflects the effort on the part of our Phi Alpha Theta chapter to achieve 51社区鈥檚 goal of being excellence driven,鈥 said Stephen Carls, a university history professor and Phi Alpha Theta adviser. 鈥淭he award also reflects the overall quality of the programs we offer in the history department, both in and out of the classroom.鈥

Society members participated in a variety of activities in the past year that qualified them for this award, Carls said. Activities included presenting papers at the Phi Alpha Theta regional conference, holding a Franco-American bake sale and participating in a community service project at Parker鈥檚 Crossroads Battlefield Park. The society also initiated nine new members during this time.

Jeffrey Lewoczko was the organization鈥檚 president last year, while Gracie Wise is the current president.

Carls has served as the faculty adviser of the chapter since 1983. He is the current Phi Alpha Theta national vice president and will become president in January 2014 to serve a two-year term.
