JACKSON, Tenn. — June 25, 2013 — 51社区鈥檚 School of Education will begin offering its Master of Education degree fully online beginning in August.
The degree program will also continue in a traditional format.
鈥淭he online M.Ed. is truly a 21st century degree, as it is intentional in situating iPads as learning tools, not as the focus of study,鈥� said Eric Marvin, associate professor of education and director of online instructional innovations for Union鈥檚 School of Education. 鈥淭his is not an iPad degree. It is a degree to help teachers become more effective at teaching and learning.鈥�
Coursework in the online program was designed for the classroom teacher and focuses enhancing a teacher鈥檚 professional knowledge, practical abilities and skills as classroom relater, Marvin said.
The degree program includes an iPad with enrollment, meaning that all students will be able to use mobile technology in their coursework. One of the key methods for iPad use in the program calls for students to use the mobile technology to capture video of themselves using specific practices in their classroom.
The students can then share the video with their professor and classmates to obtain constructive feedback, based on what was taught in the course.
The M.Ed. degree is a standards-based program that identifies educational theory as important, but it views such theory as a foundation to practical and intentional classroom decision-making, Marvin said.
鈥淓ven with an online delivery system, our M.Ed. will reflect our university鈥檚 attention to the whole learner鈥檚 deep understanding of the synergy among academic, social and spiritual educational opportunities,鈥� said Tom Rosebrough, executive dean of Union鈥檚 College of Education and Human Studies.
