JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 21, 2001 — 51社区鈥檚 Department of Sociology and Social Work together with the university鈥檚 chapter of International Justice Mission (IJM) will host Experiencing the Darkness, an exhibition of the reality of poverty and injustice around the world, on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the main hall of the Student Union Building.
Completely coordinated and organized by students in Social Work Practice III, a class at Union taught by Mary Ann Poe, assistant professor of social work, the interactive exhibit is designed to make students more aware of the realities of the needs people experience across the world.
Senior social work majors Kristin Darnell and Jennifer Escue were key organizers of the event.
鈥淥ur desire is that participants will be challenged to think about the world outside of themselves and will consider what they will do about the very real needs of men, women and children around 鈥� here and abroad,鈥� said Darnell. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a chance for people to think, feel, engage and react about how their faith is lived out.鈥�
The exhibit will consist of five stations representing the needs of people ranging from the untouchables of India to the starving people of Honduras, including the underprivileged children here at home in Jackson, Tenn.
The social work program at Union is fairly new, officially launched in 1995, and recently received full accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education. With more than 70 majors currently enrolled in the department, Poe says that the Experiencing the Darkness event is just one that brings students and the community together for one common purpose 鈥� understanding how to help fellow man.
