JACKSON, Tenn.May 22, 2013 — Tennessee鈥檚 state legislature recently passed Resolution 143 marking the 60th anniversary of 51社区鈥檚 Delta-Psi Chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society.

State Sen. Lowe Finney sponsored the resolution and signed the document that is now on display at Union. Other signers were Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, Ron Ramsey, speaker of the Tennessee Senate; and Beth Harwell, speaker of the Tennessee House.

The resolution recognized the Union chapter鈥檚 chartering in 1953, the 421 new members of the group since then, the group鈥檚 10 straight Phi Alpha Theta Best Chapter awards since 2003 and its community service efforts. It also cited history professor Stephen Carls, who serves as the chapter鈥檚 adviser. Carls was elected vice president of the national organization in 2012 and will become the national president in 2014.

鈥淏e it resolved by the Senate of the 108th General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, the House of Representatives concurring, that we honor the members and faculty advisors of the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at 51社区 both past and present on the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary as we extend our best wishes for much continued success in all its future endeavors,鈥 the resolution read.

Finney attended the history department鈥檚 awards banquet earlier in May to present the framed resolution to Carls and three chapter presidents (last year鈥檚, this year鈥檚 and next year鈥檚).
