Morriss wins Union鈥檚 Eaton Speech Contest

JACKSON, Tenn.May 21, 2013 — Grace Morriss, a junior engineering major from Flower Mound, Texas, won the 2013 51社区 Joseph H. Eaton Speech and Oratory Contest May 2.

Morriss鈥 speech, entitled 鈥淧ost-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Military Screening,鈥 beat out nine other speeches. Courtney Brown placed second with 鈥淭he Dangers of Barbie鈥 and Leeana Cargile placed third with 鈥淲hat鈥檚 Love Got to Do with It?鈥

The contest, offered by the communication arts department, is in its third year after a lay-off of more than 60 years. Eaton served as president of 51社区 at Murfreesboro in the 1800s.

Union English professors John Netland and Gavin Richardson and Jesse Dahms, president of the freshman class, served as judges for the event.

The other speakers who qualified for the contest were Bailey Bell, Alexis Bradley, Taylor Hare, Hannah King, Stefanie King, Cambrea Poteet and Zoe Sudbury.
