JACKSON, Tenn. — April 8, 2013 — Alabama football coach Nick Saban will be the featured speaker at 51社区鈥檚 Roy L. White Legacy Golf and Gala May 6.
With Alabama鈥檚 win over Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship on Jan. 7, Saban joined Frank Leahy, Bear Bryant and John McKay as the only coaches to win four national titles in the modern era. During his seven years as head coach of Alabama鈥檚 football program, he has led the team to three national titles.
The Roy L. White Legacy Golf and Gala will serve as a fundraiser for Union鈥檚 athletic programs. Union is in the second year of candidacy in its transition to NCAA Division II.
鈥淐oach Saban is not only a great coach, but an advocate for the student-athlete,鈥� said Jerry Tidwell, Union鈥檚 senior vice president for university relations and athletics. 鈥淗e maintains one of highest graduation rates in Division I. His personal priority for student-athletes makes him a great choice to speak to Union players, coaches, alumni and our community.鈥�
A National Coach of the Year five times, Saban served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005 and 2006 before moving to Alabama. He also served as head coach at LSU, where he led the Tigers to a national title in 2003 and two Southeastern Conference championships. Prior to his tenure at LSU, Saban was head coach for Michigan State and the University of Toledo.
Saban is the co-author of 鈥淭iger Turnaround,鈥� a book documenting his first two years at LSU, and 鈥淗ow Good Do You Want to Be?鈥�
He and his wife Terry have been active in the communities where they have lived. At Michigan State, the Sabans started the Nick's Kids Fund, which they have continued in Tuscaloosa. The Sabans also built 14 homes with Project Team Up and Habitat for Humanity following the 2011 tornado that struck Tuscaloosa.
A native of Monongah, W.Va., Saban is a 1973 graduate of Kent State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. He earned a master's degree in sports administration from Kent State in 1975. The Sabans have two children.
The May 6 dinner with Saban will be held at the Jackson Civic Center at 6:30 p.m.
White, trustee emeritus at 51社区, is the title sponsor for the event, which also includes an April 22 golf tournament at the Jackson Country Club. Cost for a four-person golf team is $1,000. Tables at the gala are available for $1,500, while individual dinner seats are $375 and balcony seats are $50.
