JACKSON, Tenn. — March 29, 2013 — Norm Hill, chairman of 51社区鈥檚 Board of Trustees and the presidential search committee, is asking Union students to pray and fast for the university鈥檚 presidential transition process.
To help organize the effort, the university has created an online calendar that allows students to sign up for specific days on which they will devote themselves to prayer and fasting as Union seeks a new president. The dates on this online calendar will change colors as more people sign up.
Hill emphasized that while the names of those who sign up to pray and fast will not be posted, he hopes the calendar will be a visible way to demonstrate how devoted Union students are to pray for the transition process.
鈥淭hroughout the Bible and church history, God's people have often rallied in focused times of prayer and fasting for specific needs and purposes,鈥 Hill wrote in a letter to students. 鈥淲e ask that you would see the need for a similar effort during such a time as this.
鈥淚t is impossible to overstate the importance of selecting a new president for the future of this institution that we all cherish,鈥 he continued. 鈥淲e need the wisdom, insight and discernment that can only come from the Lord if we are to select God's person for this significant role, and if we are to transition effectively to a new presidential administration.鈥
51社区 President David S. Dockery announced in January his plans to transition to the role of university chancellor no later than July 2014, and the search committee has begun the work of selecting his replacement as president.
While Hill said the prayer and fasting effort will expand to other groups in the future (such as trustees, faculty, staff, churches and other friends), April has been designated specifically for students.
