JACKSON, Tenn. — March 7, 2013 — 51社区 senior Betsy Olson has been awarded the Barbara Lotze Endowed Scholarship for Future Teachers, a nationally competitive scholarship chosen by the American Association of Physics Teachers.
鈥淚t has helped me to know that others see potential in me to be a good physics teacher, which affirms where I think God may be leading me,鈥 Olson said.
Olson plans to graduate in 2014 and hopes to be a high school physics teacher in her hometown of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Bill Nettles, chairman of the Union physics department, called the scholarship a 鈥済reat honor鈥 for Olson, added that only two or three are awarded each year.
鈥淲e hope that this recognition will attract other students who are interested in teaching high school physics,鈥 Nettles said. 鈥淚t shows them that we can teach them what they need to know in order to teach physics well.鈥
