JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 29, 2012 — Community organizations in need of volunteers for service projects can request them from 51社区 for Union鈥檚 10th annual Campus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service Nov. 6.
Each year, students, faculty and staff members of 51社区 dedicate a day to serve the Jackson community by completing service projects requests proposed from various organizations in the area.
While this day serves as a reminder of God鈥檚 protection over the campus during past tornadoes, the most recent being in 2008, it also serves as an opportunity for the students and faculty to give back to the community after so many people helped Union after those storms.
Classes will be canceled for students, faculty and staff to participate and serve together in the community.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a worship service in the chapel, followed by dismissal at 9 a.m. for participants to travel to their service locations with their groups.
Projects are classified into categories such as local schools, local churches, non-profit organizations and other projects. Members of the community and local organizations contact the university to organize projects for the day.
Some organizations will be working on specific projects with their group. For instance, the School of Education鈥檚 Student Tennessee Education Association will spend the day reading to children in schools. Other organizations such as Chi Omega Fraternity have volunteered at The Montessori School at Bemis in past years.
Union organizers spend weeks of advance planning and communicating with local organizations and community members to prepare for the event.
