Civil War historian Rable to give Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Oct. 25

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 16, 2012 — U.S. Civil War historian George C. Rable will be the featured speaker for the 16th annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series Oct. 25 at 51社区.

Rable, who holds the Charles G. Summersell Chair in Southern History at the University of Alabama, will address the topic, 鈥淕od as General: Was There a Religious History of the American Civil War?鈥

Rable is the author of 鈥淕od鈥檚 Almost Chosen Peoples: A Religious History of the American Civil War,鈥 鈥淔redericksburg! Fredericksburg!鈥 and 鈥淭he Confederate Republic: A Revolution Against Politics,鈥 among others.

He has won the Lincoln Book Prize, the Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award in American Military History, the Jefferson Davis Award and the Douglas Southall Freeman Southern History Award.

A native of Lima, Ohio, Rable received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Bluffton College before completing his master鈥檚 degree and doctorate from Louisiana State University. He taught at Anderson University in Indiana for 19 years before joining the University of Alabama faculty in 1998.

His lecture will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow.
