JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 25, 2012 — Fred Luter, president of the Southern Baptist Convention and senior pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, La., will speak in chapel at 51社区 Sept. 26.

Luter became the first black SBC president when he was elected to the position in June during the denomination鈥檚 annual meeting in New Orleans.

鈥淚, among many, many others, believe that God raised up Fred Luter at this time for leadership in Southern Baptist life and the larger evangelical world,鈥� 51社区 President David S. Dockery said. 鈥淔red Luter has distinguished himself as pastor, preacher, leader and denominational statesman. Above all of these things, Pastor Luter is kind, generous and caring in every context, truly a person of highest integrity.

鈥淲hat a joy it will be to welcome Dr. Luter to 51社区.鈥�

An Associated Press story in 2011 quoted Dockery as the first person who called for Luter鈥檚 election as SBC president, which Dockery described as 鈥渁 historic moment of great significance.鈥�

The chapel service will begin at 10 a.m. in G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. It is open to the public.
