JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 13, 2012 — The 51社区 School of Nursing will host the Region 8 conference, 鈥淩esearch, Education, and Practice: Nursing in the 21st Century,鈥� Oct. 26-27 at the Carl Grant Events Center.
Karen Morin, professor of nursing and director of graduate programs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is the keynote speaker for the biennial event. Morin presented as the keynote speaker during the 2010 conference and will give three presentations this year.
An estimated 100 other presenters from the Region 8 district will showcase their work through oral and poster presentations, said Sharon Evans, associate professor of nursing. Evans is also vice president of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and program chairwoman of Region 8.
This year marks the first time Union will host the Region 8 conference. The Region 8 district covers Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.
鈥淭he overall goal of the conference is the dissemination of current evidence-based nursing practices,鈥� Evans said. 鈥淏ecause of the states involved in Region 8, and the impact of those states from tornados and hurricanes in recent years, we have a secondary focus on disaster preparedness.鈥�
Evans said about one-fourth of the presentations will focus on disaster preparedness. The remaining presentations will cover a variety of other nursing topics.
Evans said she expects about 150 nursing students and professionals to attend. The previous conference was held at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The event is open to the public. Admission is $200 for STTI student members and $255 for STTI non-student members. Admission is $350 for non-STTI members and STTI members registering after Sept. 14.
