JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 16, 2012 — 51社区鈥檚 Master of Social Work degree has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the only accrediting body of social work education in the country.
Janet Furness, associate dean of the School of Social Work and MSW program director, received the notification Feb. 13.
鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted that Union is on the cutting edge of some pretty exciting opportunities for social work practice in West Tennessee,鈥� Furness said. 鈥淥ur graduates are prepared to serve individuals, families, groups, organizations, to do agency administration and grant writing 鈥� a whole range of service provision.鈥�
Union鈥檚 is now the only accredited MSW degree in West Tennessee.
Launched in 2008, the MSW program has graduated 93 students thus far, with another 48 expected to graduate in May. The accreditation applies retroactively to all who have already completed the program, and Furness said those graduates can now complete their licensing requirements from the state of Tennessee.
